Kim Salmon has been writing and performing stylistically diverse music for over 4 decades.

With The Scientists, Beasts Of Bourbon, Kim Salmon and The Surrealists, STM, The Darling Downs, Antenna, SALMON, Smoked Salmon and simply solo, Kim Salmon has found a slightly or even wildly different audience at each juncture.

Often referred to as “The Godfather of Grunge” he is cited as a seminal influence on countless bands including Mudhoney, Nirvana, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The White Stripes, Sonic Youth, The Drones and Spacemen 3 and has shared the stage with the likes The Stooges, Television, Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds, The Cramps, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, The Pop Group and even U2.

Kim Salmon has his share of ghosts lurking within his career.

Scientists drummer Brett Rixon, STM double bass player Andrew Entch, Chicago native Phillip Hertz, ex-wife and one time Scientists manager Linda Fearon, Lowbrow auteur and drummer Nick Combe, Surrealists rhythm section Brian Henry Hooper and Tony Pola, founding Beasts member Spencer P Jones, legendary producer Jim Dickinson, and the majestic Ron Peno.

Their life stories all intersect Kim’s, with these convergences significantly impacting Kim’s crooked pathway through music and life. Haunted Grooves is Kim’s telling of some of the stories left to him by the people he’s collaborated with who are no longer around to tell them. 

Performed live on stage with long time collaborator Douglas Galbraith and a Boss RC 1 loop pedal, Haunted Grooves captures Kim Salmon’s resurrection of some of those no longer lost, but still very much haunted grooves.

All throughout Kim Salmon’s 47 year, song-writing, performing and recording career audiences have fixated and latched on to some of the more ‘hook laden’ and ‘catchy’ aspects of his oeuvre.

He has played in many ensembles - the Scientists, the Surrealists, Beasts Of Bourbon and Antenna to name but a few. Until now, however, he has never had a band that focuses just on this aspect - ie the ‘hits’, the ‘shit’, the ‘all killer no filler’ out and out ‘pop’ stuff. Finally he has assembled a band for just this purpose - Smoked Salmon! Your ‘one stop fish shop’ if you will. Frantic Romantic, Swampland, Cool Fire, Come On Spring, Drop Out and Last Night all rub shoulders with his newer purpose written ‘melodically inclined’ material for the listening pleasure of you the pop punter! The band coalesce the Smoked Salmon-esque threads from across Kim Salmon’s sprawling career. Poppy, but rockin’. Literate, but primitive. Melodic, but messy. Kim Salmon’s Smoked Salmon will have you swingin’ from the rafters, crawlin’ in the gutter and dancin’ in the street!

Smoked Salmon has an international cast of around a dozen members, different players for different locations - Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Tokyo and Paris. In October 2023 they stormed through France, sharing the stage with Warren Ellis and Kid Congo Powers. In January 2024 they blazed through the underground punk clubs of Japan. With plans for a full

European tour in 2025 already in the works, there is no stopping Smoked Salmon.
